Sewing Machines' Most Wanted: Top Three Sewing Problems

So you're trying to use your sewing machine, and the stitches are messed up! The thread keeps getting wound knottily around the bobbin, stitches are getting skipped, the whole thing is a mess.

a big tangle of wires

It's probably one of three problems: top thread, bobbin thread, or the needle.

First off, if you're noticing nests or bad stitches or the machine's fouled up and won't move- IS YOUR PRESSER FOOT DOWN?

Sorry for yelling, but go ahead and fix that, ok? Don't sew with the presser foot in the upright position. It needs to press.

Number one: check your threading from the top thread. Unthread the whole section from the needle to the spool on top. Don't beat yourself up-- even I sometimes miss something while threading. Sometimes the problem can be solved by simply rethreading the top.

Number two: did you know that sewing machines almost always have a preference on which way you load the bobbin into the bobbin case? It's true. Newer machines will have a tiny diagram on the bobbin window that shows the thread either coming off the bobbin from the left or right. See that you have that in the correct way. Not sure? Look in your manual, and download yours if you don't have a copy.

Ok, two and a half-- make sure you're using the type of bobbin your machine likes. She has very specific tastes! If it came with plastic bobbins, keep using plastic. Plastic and metal have different weights, and if a machine wasn't made to have something heavier in it, it will react. This is another use for your manual.

Number three: your needle may be old. Manuals say to change your needle every 6 to 8 hours, but who's keeping track? If you're still having trouble with your stitches after trying the first two steps, replace your needle. You won't be able to tell with the naked eye if it's getting dull or slightly bent-- but your machine can tell. Change it out if you are having problems. Make sure to dispose of it safely.

If things are STILL going weird, it could be a problem that requires servicing. But it's probably frustration, so go get a glass of water and have a little break. It's nothing that can't wait until tomorrow.
