Beginner Sewing Project: Pajama Pants

So you've taken a Sewing Machine lesson with me, you've got your machine set up and ready... now what? People ask me what a good sewing beginner project is, and I always say-- pajama pants! They are typically only 4 pieces to put together, and there is no special fitting necessary. They work well in woven fabrics, which are easier for beginners to start sewing with. If the pattern only lists knit fabrics, move on to the next one.

Closet Core Fran Pajamas - model is wearing brown and tan patterned pajamas top and pants, posing against a tan background. She looks very cool.

Here are some good patterns you can buy that have well-written instructions. Beware of just any ol' pattern-- the free ones are a good price, but they may not have good instructions. For beginners, I stress using pattern brands that are well-known and tested. Remember: AI doesn't have a body, so never trust a sewing pattern that even smells like AI.

The patterns I'll recommend come from trusted pattern brands and come with good instructions.

WBM Unisex Pajama Pants - available through Harts Fabric in Santa Cruz, so you can get your pattern and fabric in one place!

Closet Core Fran Pajamas -  available through Stone Mountain and Daughters, so you can get your pattern and fabric in one place!

Butterick B6296 Pajama Pants - for beginners I recommend sticking with woven fabrics (non-stretchy) that aren't shiny/slinky.
